Thriller suspense series about a serial killer

The Following

Title: The Following (TV Series)
Summary:Thriller suspense series about a serial killer
Rating: 4 ½ / 5
Description:Kevin Bacon makes his debut as an FBI agent chasing the escaped serial killer he helped catch eight years ago

When I watched the first few episodes of The Following I was reminded of the famous American criminal and musician Charles Manson. He led what became known as the Manson Family. His followers murdered three people in cold blood at the behest of Manson. He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and convicted. Procecutor Vincent Bugliosi wrote a book about Manson called “Helter Skelter” a term Manson took from a song by the Beatles which in his version was an apocalyptic race war.

The Following is the story of an ex FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and his attempts to recapture serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) following the latter's escape from prison. Hardy soon discovers that the charismatic Carroll has surrounded himself with a group of like-minded individuals (which he met while teaching and while in prison), and turned them into a cult of fanatical killers. When Carroll's son Joey (Kyle Catlett) is abducted by his father's followers, the FBI discovers that it is the first step in a wider plan for Carroll to escape custody, humiliate Hardy, and murder Carroll's ex-wife Claire (Natalie Zea).

Kevin Bacon slips easily into the role of an alcoholic FBI agent who writes a book about Caroll. Caroll himself is a failed novelist having written one book titled The Gothic sea inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s last unfinished work, The Lighthouse. He believes, like his hero Edgar Allan Poe, in the "insanity of art", he initially began to make "art" by eviscerating his female students. He ultimately killed fourteen of them before he was caught by Ryan Hardy. While serving out his sentence at the Virginia Central Penitentiary in Waverly, Virginia, Carroll gathers a cult-like collection of followers, who are willing to murder, kidnap, and even sacrifice themselves in order to execute his plan of revenge against Hardy and his ex-wife.

James Purefoy brings out the demented genius of his character and plays the charismatic killer to the hilt. But you watch because you want to know how a washed up FBI agent with a pacemaker in his heart is going to be able to stop a killer. Bacon comes across as human and flawed but like producer Kevin Williamson says when comparing Hardy to Jack Bauer, the protagonist of the hit series 24, the character is someone who “will die saving the moment”.

Needless to say there are gory scenes in the series with blood galore but the suspense keeps you glued to the TV screen. If you’re a fan of the crime drama genre do not miss this one!
